Recommended Technology for Blackboard

Friday, April 19, 2024

UA-PTC uses the Blackboard platform for all courses offered online. To access classes, complete coursework, and for the best online experience using Blackboard, please see the following recommendations:

Computer

Most Windows, Macs, and laptop computers work well in Blackboard. However, not all systems will be able to run Blackboard. If your computer does not have the proper hardware or software, Blackboard may run slowly, lack tool functionality or not work at all.

Operating Systems

Windows

  • Windows 8
  • Windows 10 or later

MAC

  • OS X 10.12
  • OS X 10.13
  • OS X 10.14
  • OS X 10.15 or later

Mobile/Tablet Devices

Completing tasks and assignments in Blackboard using a tablet or mobile device is not recommended as many Blackboard features will not work.

Hardware

Prior to using Blackboard, compare your current system configuration with the recommended system requirements below.

  • Processor: 1 GHz or faster
  • RAM: 2 GB or higher
  • 20 GB of available hard-drive space
  • Sound card and speakers

Internet

  • High speed: Download speed of at least 1.5 Mbps, 750 kbps upload

Browsers

Blackboard works best in the latest versions for the following browsers:

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari

You can also check your current browser’s compatibility at the following: Blackboard Browser Checker

Accessibility

Blackboard Ally - This tool is already provided in Blackboard for retrieving content in different accessibility formats (electronic braille, mp3 audio for listening, beeline reader, and more). To use this feature, select the black "A" icon as pictured below.

Screen Reader - When using a screen reader, use Chrome and JAWS on Windows. For Mac, use Safari and VoiceOver.

Equipment

  • Web Camera
  • Microphone
  • Speakers

Software

The Office 365 suite is required for most assignments in Blackboard. Enrolled students and employees can download the suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more) for free! To get started, log into Office 365 with your @students.uaptc.edu or @uaptc.edu e-mail and password, and then click Install Office. For instructions, see the following: Windows | Mac
