University of Arkansas - Pulaski Technical College’s Community Education Program offers a variety of hands-on, non-credit Life and Leisure classes that are open to the public year around. Community Education Policies

Registration Requirements: Registration is required for all Community Education classes. To begin registration please click on the class title. To register by phone, please call Kristin Howell at (501) 907-6670 ext. 3407

Cancellation Policy: 100% refund if canceled at least 7 days before the class date. Cancellations occurring within 7 days of the class date will only receive a refund only if the class spot can be sold.

Community Education Class Enrollment Minimum Policy: In order to use teaching resources to their fullest, a Class Enrollment Minimum Policy is used to ensure that courses offered have a minimum number of enrolled students. Such a policy allows students to engage with a sufficient number of other learners in the classroom and also efficiently uses instructor time, thus facilitating the research and service portions of instructor obligations. In the event that a class is cancelled due to low enrollment, all registrants will receive a full refund.

Relief Printmaking: Sugar Skulls

 

Day of the Dead sugar skulls will be our inspiration for a relief print edition. Students will draw then carve our image into linoleum. Students will properly ink and learn how to operate a printing press to produce multiples of the artwork. Ages 16 and up.

Introduction to Archery

 

This FREE introductory course is for all archers who wish to participate in any of our youth or adult archery programs, or those who just wish to learn more about archery and begin practicing shooting with a bow. Archers shoot under the guidance of a certified instructor. This course offer participants a chance to learn about archery, archery equipment, and the various types of archery shooting. Archery is a great way to sharpen skills, build self-esteem and create a stronger atmosphere for success in the classroom!

Class Times:

 

5-7 p.m. - Open Range - Come shoot at the range, and practice skills. This is a great opportunity for experienced archers or those who have previously taken an introductory course. Open to the public, no registration required.

 

6-7 p.m. - Introduction to Archery for New Participants - Learn how to safely handle and shoot a bow under the guidance of a certified professional. Leave with the skills and desire to keep shooting long after class has ended! REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

Ages 12 and up. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Archery equipment is provided.

Tune Up Your French: Practical French

 

If you are among the many people who studied some French in high school, college, or even beyond but still get stuck when it comes to actually speaking the language, this course is for you. Practical tips for how to relearn French. Learn French by making mistakes. Learn to avoid French mistakes English speakers often make. Practice grammar and vocabulary. Discover your inner French for any situation and up your French game. Gain essential insights on eating and drinking, shopping, manners, travel, and humor. You should also expect a stereotype-busting introduction to history (colonization and decolonization), culture, cultural history, and literature, via sauces and cheese.

Session 3: Practical French: Practice using short expressions that add flair and confidence to make you sound more like a native. Instruction about what the French say in a given situation, like in a store and at a train stations. Learn idioms and their variations in a given situation.

Cost: $55 per class or $180 for the 4-class series

Snakes of Arkansas

 

This FREE introductory program will help participants identify venomous snakes native to Arkansas from a distance, using features other than pupil and head shape. We will also discuss the ecological importance of snakes and environmental threats to reptiles and amphibians. Learning to identify snakes in Arkansas and learning their importance can shed new light on this often misunderstood group of reptiles.

All ages. All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Stained Glass: Mosaics

 

Just in time for fall, learn how to make a beautiful piece of art! In this class students will create either a pumpkin or sunflower by learning how to nip glass in order to make mosaics. Each student will leave with a custom 8”x 8” framed, mosaic glass picture.

Would you rather create two mosaic glass pictures and go home with the pumpkin and sunflower? No problem! Please allow for two additional hours; 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Please bring a snack or sack lunch with you. The Additional cost is $50.

Ghost Hunting and Investigation

 

So you want to be a ghost hunter? Or are you just curious about the world of paranormal? This course will introduce you to the world of paranormal and show you how this subject has intrigued mankind for centuries. Learn about equipment, proper technique and methods used during an investigation. You will also hear and see the evidence of spirits and how they try to communicate with us every day. You will then put your skills to work while participating in an investigation at MacArthur Museum, one of the most HAUNTED buildings in Arkansas!

The class and investigation is led by Rhonda Burton, Co-Founder of Arkansas Ghost Catchers. The class will begin with a lecture and then you'll move on to the investigation. During class, you will learn about the different aspects of ghost hunting, equipment, techniques and how to review your evidence. An EVP (electronic voice phenomena) session will be part of the class. This will show you how to try and communicate with spirits using digital voice recorders and laptops.

Must be 18 years or older to register. If a participant is between the ages of 12 - 17, they must be accompanied by an adult that is also registered for the class.

Drawing Dinosaurs!

 

Let’s show off your favorite dinosaur! Students will draw, paint and mono print dino scales on a large canvas. Our background habitat will come to life through layered mix media and collage to give our viewer an excellent sense of space.
